What is Aspartame?
An artificial, non-saccharide sweetener roughly 200 times sweeter than sugar, Aspartame combines aspartic acid and phenylalanine. It is one of the most rigorously tested food ingredients worldwide.
Aspartame manufacturing occurs through fermentation before synthesis. Manufacturing by fermentation takes bacteria to react before isolating the required amino acids. After this, they react phenylalanine with methanol and other substances before further reactions to acetic acid. Both routes are then purified, milled and packed before being resold worldwide.
As a regularly tested product, a vast range of studies shows that the product is safe for consumption and is proven to reduce caloric intake in adults and children.
Less stable under heat, Aspartame gets buffered with other sweeteners such as Aspartame and bulking agents like Maltodextrin, Dextrose many others. However, Aspartame is well known for being stable under acidic and base mixtures, making it a powerful addition to various products and applications.
