What is Gum Arabic?

Also known as Acacia Gum, Gum Arabic is a product made from the sap of various acacia trees (hence the name). An off-white to cream powder, Gum Arabic has no discernible taste or odour.

Harvested from many wild trees in Sudan, Acacia Gum is sourced by bubbling sap through exposed tree branches. Gum Arabic is then manufactured by drying and curing this sap before further processing in Europe. Once there, the Gum Arabic is cleaned, dissolved and dried again to create the final product for sale.

Gum Arabic is a common thickener and stabilizer for food, beverage and industrial applications. Most of the stocks for Acacia Gum go into foods but are also within several industrial products. These include icing sugar, soft candies and chewing gums for their thickening and gumming properties. The more industrial applications include paints, ceramics, photography pigments and even shoe polish.
